Team Australia makes a strong start in damp ISDE opener

The 2025 FIM International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) has begun in Italy, with the 660 riders greeted with wet and slick conditions to kickstart the 99th running of the prestigious event.

Any thoughts of easing into the ISDE were quickly dispelled in the challenging conditions, and with the degree of difficulty high it was as much about minimising mistakes and getting back to base in one piece than pushing the envelope.

And on that score Motorcycling Australia’s three Trophy teams all showed plenty of resilience, laying the foundations for another successful event.

After day one, the World Trophy team (Daniel Milner, Jonte Reynders, Josh Strang and Jye Dickson) sits in sixth position, two minutes and 49 seconds behind the leader and defending champion, France.

The Junior World Trophy combination of Kyron Bacon, Korey McMahon and Gus Riordan are third behind Italy and France, and in the Women’s World Trophy Team Australia (Jess Gardiner, Danielle McDonald and Madison Healey) is second behind long-time rival America.

The Junior World Trophy team is less than 20 seconds behind France, while defending champion Sweden is back in sixth.

And in the Women’s World Trophy, Team USA holds nearly a seven-minute lead over the Aussies, with France a further 12 seconds behind in third.

Strang (Beta), riding in his ninth ISDE, was brilliant on day one and sits 13th overall in the individual standings ahead of Reynders (KTM, 15th), Bacon (Kawasaki, 20th), Milner (KTM, 25th) and Riordan (KTM, 28th). Stang is also third in the E3 class.

Bacon finished the day in stunning, hard-charging form, finishing third in the final two special tests – only a few seconds behind multiple world enduro champion Andrea Verona (GASGAS).

However, it’s reigning ISDE individual champion Josep Garcia (KTM) who leads after day one, despite finding some trouble in the final special test. Garcia leads Leo Le Quere (TM) and Verona, with the consistent Strang less than a minute behind Garcia.

Australia’s three club teams – Oyster Bay Motorcycle Club, Dandenong Motorcycle Club and Dungog Motorcycle Club – are 10th, 82nd and 114th respectively after day one.

Riders will complete the same return loop out of Bergamo on day two, with the weather forecast promising dry and sunny weather and the chance for riders to build momentum after a torrid day one.
