ISDE: Junior World Trophy team charges home as women maintain podium heroics

The MXstore Australian team has wrapped up another International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) in Portugal, finishing with exceptional second and fourth places in the Women’s World Trophy and Junior World Trophy respectively – while an undermanned World Trophy outfit was gallant in finishing 16th.

With Will Dennett (Triumph) in searing form at the business end of proceedings, Australia’s Junior World Trophy team – which also included Kogan Lock (GASGAS) and Max Midwinter (Husqvarna) – was the overall winner on day five, and then second on a final day beach course.

Dennett was the fastest Junior World Trophy rider on the final two days – while Lock was also brilliant in winning a special test on day five in his ISDE debut – which helped the Aussies to bump the Czech Republic out of fourth position.

In the 100th edition of the ISDE, Italy won the Junior World Trophy for the second year in a row, ahead of the United States of America, Spain, Australia and the Czech Republic.

In the Women’s World Trophy, it was a fourth successive silver medal for Australia behind the United States of America, with Danielle McDonald, Madi Simpson and Jess Gardiner (all Yamaha) pushing hard until the very end.

The final margin of nine minutes and 23 seconds (9:23) was inflated after Simpson and McDonald tangled and crashed in the early stages of the eventful beach test, with Gardiner the first Aussie home.

France, New Zealand and FIM Latin America completed the top five in the Women’s World Trophy.

“The women were all riding exceptionally well,” said Gardiner. “America’s been the team to beat for the last few years but to be able to stand on the podium in second place for Australia is something that never gets old.

“I am super proud of how Madi went in her first ISDE, Danielle absolutely smashed it, and I had a lot of fun in my 14th event. The final moto on the beach was super special.

“Thanks to everyone who has supported us, and hopefully we’ll be back next year and keep Australia rolling on that podium.”

World Trophy rider Gus Riordan (Honda) also found another gear on the run home, which included being the second fastest E1 rider behind Spanish superstar Josep Garcia (KTM) on day five.

Riordan was seventh in the E1 class after six days of fierce – and at times, vey dusty – competition, and also the leading Australian in the hotly contested outright battle in 19th position ahead of Kyron Bacon (Kawasaki, 23rd), Josh Strang (Beta, 26th), Dennett (39th) and Lock (41st).

Bacon (E1) and Strang (E3) also finished top 10 in their respective classes, while McDonald was the second fastest woman behind American Brandy Richards (KTM).

Italian Andrea Verona (KTM) was the outright winner from Garcia and Zachary Pichon (TM), snapping’s Garcia’s five-year hold on the prestigious individual honour.

With Korey McMahon (KTM) an early casualty, Riordan, Bacon and Strang were always on the back foot in the World Trophy, while Italy ran a successful defence ahead of France, Sweden, the United States of America and Spain.
